Marty Strayer
Live monitoring with the IE-40 reference earphones

Monitor engineer Marty Strayer excels at one of the most challenging jobs in the industry, managing the live sound experience of world-class performers like Madonna, Seal, Tina Turner and Paul McCartney. In order to please his diverse clientele, Strayer needed a multi-purpose reference monitoring system that would suit a variety of situations. After years of contending with expensive, troublesome custom solutions, Strayer discovered the award-winning IE series from M-Audio—immediately adopting the IE-40 reference earphones as his standard monitoring system for live performance applications.

When working in high-stress live performance environments, it’s essential to have a go-to system that works every time. “For a long time, I’ve wanted to be able to confidently offer artists, backing vocalists and band members an in-ear monitoring system that sounds truly amazing right out of the box,” explains Strayer. “M-Audio has developed a quality over-the-counter solution to reference monitoring—no more expensive ear moulds and custom manufacturing costs. These monitors are as good—if not better than—the custom earphones available today.

“I can't express how excited I am about the new IE-40 reference earphones,” he continues. “They are quite simply the best over-the-counter in-ear monitors that I've ever heard. We’re currently using several pairs on tour with R. Kelly, and I’ll probably get a few more. All the artists absolutely love them. They can’t believe the low-end response and overall hi-fi sound quality—the IE-40 monitors sound fat, crisp and clean with amazing isolation.

“I choose M-Audio gear because it always works flawlessly,” concludes Strayer. “When doing live monitoring for professional artists, dependability is very important. My M-Audio gear has been all over the world and it’s still rock-solid.”
