The combo XLR inputs will accept microphones and line-level devices (synth, drum machine, mixer, etc.). Use standard XLR cables for all microphones and 1/4-inch TRS cables for all line-level instruments. Adjust the gain for each channel with the Input Gain knobs.
If you are using a microphone that requires phantom power to function, you can supply that power by toggling the Phantom Power Switch on the front panel. The additional 48V will be applied to both XLR Inputs 1/2. Phantom power is only sent through the XLR ports, not TRS, so be sure to connect your mic with an XLR cable.
If you are using a guitar or bass with an active pickup, you could use the line-level 1/4-inch inputs as an alternative to the Instrument Input.
Connect guitars or bass guitars with passive pickups to the Instrument inputs. Use standard 1/4-inch TS cables to connect a guitar or bass guitar to these inputs. Adjust the gain for each channel with the 1/2 Input Gain knobs.
While these inputs can accept a signal from most active pickups, 1/4-inch Inputs 1/2 can also be used as a direct input for a bass or guitar with hotter active pickups.
The Main Outputs can accept two balanced 1/4-inch TRS cables controlled by a large, solid-feeling metal rotary level knob. Additionally, there is a 1/4-inch Headphone Jack with separate level control for private listening.
Balanced 1/4-inch cables are referred to as TRS (tip-ring-sleeve). This is because a TRS cable has 2 signal conductors while a TS (tip-sleeve) cable only has one. You can quickly identify if your 1/4-inch cable is TRS or TS by looking at the physical jack. If you see 2 rings circling the connector then the cable is TRS. Here are some images for reference:
The USB/Direct knob adjusts the mix of the audio signal from the AIR's inputs (Direct) and the audio output of your computer (USB). This mix is monitored from the Main Outputs and Headphone Output.
This knob is useful when compensating for latency. If you are experiencing a delay between your input and output signal while recording, turn the knob toward the Direct position to increase the blend of unprocessed audio. When you are finished recording, return the knob to the USB position to monitor directly from your DAW.
Use a 5-pin MIDI DIN cable to connect your AIR and external MIDI devices. Select the AIR 192|6 in your DAW as a MIDI I/O device to send and receive MIDI data to outboard gear.
